gawd I hate microsoft office…

Powered by Gregarious (21)

I mindlessly updated my OSX Microsoft Office 2008 installation today with SP1 figuring that it would “improve” the Suite. Little did I know I would end up cursing the abhorrent company and it’s programming skillz for bunging my system. You see, for some people, installing SP1 for Office 2008 in OSX Leopard will be stuck with “the recurring appearance of the Office Setup Assistant when launching any of the applications in the Office suite. Even if you go through the wizard step-by-step and click Finish at the end, the application [won’t] start.”

This was happening to me, and after a few minutes of searching the Intertubes, I found that it is happening to others as well. After trying a couple of suggestions unsuccessfully, I ended up finding this page that solved my problems.

Microsoft. Making things easier. lol…

Get. It. Right… Please.

how did our society view women during the war?

This page from Transportation Magazine illustrates just how our society used to view women during our great-grandparents’ era. It’s comical nowadays to read this article and think that this was a legitimate serious article in it’s time. 60 years really was Long Ago…

on the Pwn-2-Own competition at CanSecWest in Vancouver

I was there, and I have been reading the banter on the blogs and news sites. People, the contest was not about which platform is the strongest or weakest! It was a contest to see who could hack into any of the platforms. As for what platform a given person chooses to hack, what does it matter which one they choose beyond understanding that that hacker is most familiar with that given platform that they hacked? If I’m historically a Linux security professional, why would I spend my significant time and effort to find a Windows hack (and vice versa)?

Just let the contest be about the hackers who were in attendance with an opportunity to have a go at the machines they choose and be less about the operating systems that were beaten or not. For all we know more of the attendees could have spent the majority of their time trying to hack Vista or OSX for the publicity effect and not even decided to seriously challenge the Linux Ubuntu platform. I wouldn’t be so confident to jump up and say it is hacker-proof simply because the attendees with this level of knowledge chose to focus on one of the other operating systems.

As much as I dislike Vista and Windows in general, I have to defend them (and OSX) a little and just state the obvious. Three different systems were presented so that the widest variety of hackers could have a go at what they know. No more, no less!

By the way, the sessions I attended were excellent and a lot of fun!

…on karma and fixing my 24″ white Intel C2D iMac with a broken LCD inverter board

Powered by Gregarious (21)

Well, recently I had a bit of bad luck with my lovely 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac. In a good-bad-good karma story I will tell you about my experience fixing my broken white 24″ iMac with a series of photos and walkthrough of the disassembly and the inverter itself. I hope this helps someone. For the impatient non-readers, skip to the bottom for photos…

I bought the iMac in November of 2006 as the last revision of the line before the new Aluminum ones were released. I had never purchased a Mac before, and I purchased it at Future Shop and then never purchased the Applecare extended warranty. So I pick up the huge iMac box and a few other smaller things from Future Shop and head to the till. The clerk at the till had seemed flustered for whatever reason and he was talking with another employee at the same time. I reached behind me and grabbed a couple of pops from the cooler while he was ringing everything through. I was in a hurry as my wife and baby boy were waiting in the mall and - I knew - running out of patience with my Future Shop visit, so I was also putting out fires by talking to her on the cell phone telling her I will only be a couple more minutes. I snagged the receipt from the clerk, and he bagged everything and I left.

So I get home, and wanted to check the cost I paid for a cordless phone that I had also bought at the same time. Upon reviewing the receipt, I saw that the clerk had not run through the iMac on the receipt thus not charging me $2100 for the device! What the ?!
