So it was in the beginning of 2006 when Apple decided to make the unbelievable change over to the Intel processor from the PowerPC architecture that I first really became interested in the Macintosh as a platform with potential - for me that is. I did appreciate their hardware ever since Steve Jobs regained control of Apple but until the processor change, to me it was just a pretty design with incompatible contents for my geek lifestyle. You see, I am an Intel/AMD baby and I always have been. I grew up on DOS and Windows, then moved over to the Linux platform and became proficient at that. I am -currently- a Linux fan first of all, then an OSX fan, followed now by Vista, then XP.
Processor conversion aside, the Mas OS really started to grow on me when Apple created OSX and left OS9 in the dust. Now they had a real UNIX operating system to work with, and on top of that, they had what appeared to be a well run workstation as well where hardware just worked. Apple also had enough of the desktop/workstation sector covered off to justify the large software companies continuing to make the big apps (read Adobe, Office) for this platform. It’s seems to be like Linux (architecture-wise since it’s UNIX) but with formal big market support in graphics and video. Yeay!
So now, here I am in late 2006 purchasing a new 24″ iMac Core 2 Duo and so far, loving the solution. I can sum up the design of these computers with one word - Elegance. Man they definitely know how to engineer good hardware. I am at the stage in my life where I don’t mind spending a little more for a lot better hardware. I won’t spend a LOT more, but a little is reasonable. As I mentioned earlier, I am very into photography as well as occasional video production. These areas have been sorely lacking in the Linux world, and I now loathe to use Windows and all it’s necessary bloated slow supportware just to make it safe. Having said that, I still love and appreciate Linux for all the webservers that I set up and manage. Nothing beats Linux for a server -and- it does make a damn fine workstation for general usage but I think I am being converted before my very eyes over to OSX. Oh and now I have the elegant hardware too. One thing is for certain - I have gained a new appreciation for hating those loud beige boxes now…

I really agree with what you said. I am in a similar situation as you except I have a MacBook Pro. Without a doubt the best laptop I have ever owned. I love OSX too. Good read!
