I bought an iPod Touch to basically demo and play with the jailbreaking ability of the device. I bought the last one from a major store nearby, and within about an hour i got the ipod freed from it’s jail and started putting applications on it.
First, though, a little about the device… It is so slim that I can put it into my front jeans pocket and not even notice it is there. The screen quality is really quite amazing when you compare with competing devices currently on the market, and I even find that I can type nicely on the device when in landscape mode using the on-screen keyboard. I am writing this whole article from the iPod online. Sweet. I think the only thing out there that even comes close to the functionality of the iPod Touch is the Archos player and it’s substantially larger, thicker, and heavier than the iPod Touch - and the interface is nowhere near as intuitive and this one.
So anyway, sparing the details for later, when it’s freed from the Unix jail, this little device goes from being a music and video player to being a computer in the palm of your hand. There certainly is nothing like ssh’ing into the iPod from another computer or even more impressively, using one of the terminal apps and ssh’ing into another computer system from this iPod while sipping a coffee at the local coffee shop. Again, simply profound. I have been using this thing for two days now and even though I am a die hard audio and video podcast listener/watcher, I have yet to plug a pair of headphones into it to listen to music - there’s just so many cool things you can do with it beyond what you imagine an iPod doing before. I wonder if Steve Jobs’ Touch has been freed? He needs to at least consider the number of people that would buy these amazing devices just because of the functionality and versatility achieved by jailbreaking this little bad boy. It really does turn your iPod into a super-portable Unix computer system. There’s your super small OSX box that everyone has been waiting with bated breath for… My next task will be to try and get nmap installed on it. I don’t know if it’s possible yet as I haven’t had time to research it, but wow the world is your portable oyster!
I will follow up this posting with further information on what my gave apps are, and what I did to free my device in the next day or so.
A profound thanks goes out to those tireless hackers out there who continue to find new ways to make our investments even better. We love you. In particular I would like to mention the great user conversations being held in the forums here. All your questions will likely have already been asked and answered.

Thanks for the links and thoughts. I think I’m going to now try it on mine. It’s too much potential to not. Cheers!
